Stephan studied viticulture at Elsenburg Agricultural College before he started working on L’Avenir Wine Estate. In 2000 he started making wine under mentorship of Francois Naudé. In 2006 he joined the team at Marianne, also based in the Simonsberg area of Stellenbosch. While an employee of Marianne, he was seconded to the owner’s other farms in France for a harvest. He was fortunate to gain experience at Chateau Montlese and Chateau Desteux in St. Emillion and also Chateau La Clemence in Pomorol.
Retief has followed a career in the financial markets. Retief is responsible for the farm finaces and loves to get involved in the tasting room.
