Our journey started with a shared vision, family ties, and a commitment to crafting wines that reflect the unique character of our terroir. From our beginnings in the vineyard to the exceptional wines we make today, our story blends tradition, innovation, and a dedication to excellence.

Our Story

As told by Retief du Toit, one of the deux frères (two brothers):

Deux Frères began with a pivotal phone call from Stephan while working in France. He was very keen to apply some of the new knowledge from his experiences in Pomerol and St Emilion. I promised that when he came home, we would embark on a journey to create something of our own.

In 2008, Stephan and I began cultivating the land our mother, Hester, and stepfather, Marc Wiehe, had purchased in 1999. The soil was rich, but the journey was far from easy. After extensive soil preparation, careful planting, and years of dedication, we finally bottled our first vintage in 2011. That was just the beginning.

The Name?

It came about during a lively, wine-fueled family lunch when Marc, ever the character, declared, “For heaven’s sake, you’re two brothers –
just call it Deux Frères!”

And so, Deux Frères was born.
